UPDATED: Is Foster Campbell using taxpayer property for political purposes?
It certainly appears so, but then, I’m no legal expert. However, if the press examines the case with the same intensity with which they covered “bumper sticker-gate,” I’m sure we’ll get some answers.
What you’ll see are five campaign contact locations. Thing is, three of them are Louisiana Public Service Commission offices. A quick search shows you that the addresses and numbers listed on this political page are in fact the same as those listed for offices paid for by Louisiana’s taxpayers and for the purpose of doing the taxpayers’, not a political candidate’s, business. For one location, Mr. Campbell’s government email address is even listed. Again, I’m no expert, but I know enough about campaign law to think the legal term for all this is: a big no no.
Now, maybe this is a minor error made by the campaign’s web staff. On the other hand, it might raise some troubling questions that require examination. Like, how long has this page looked like this? Having been directed to do so by this web page, have people called these government offices seeking campaign information and materials? Have their requests been granted? In other words, are the taxpayers paying for Foster Campbell campaign work? Will the press even ask? Seems to me the press set their own standard and precedent with the full canvas they gave to Jindal campaign offices over “bumper sticker-gate.” But this potential infraction by Mr. Campbell’s campaign strikes me as more meaningful by several orders of magnitude. Will the press abide by their precedent? Time will tell.
Here’s what I say, and you can quote me on it: At best this episode shows incompetence in the way Mr. Campbell runs an operation exceedingly smaller than the state government he hopes to lead. At worst, it’s another possible violation of law by a Louisiana elected official, and only an investigation can tell us how severely and to what extent the law has been violated. Haven’t the Louisiana people had enough of this kind of self-serving junk?
UPDATE: As predicted, the Foster Campbell campaign has changed the contact page on its campaign website, deleting the three government office contact locations. I’ve got two responses: 1) We get results. 2) Same questions still apply….
